update... week 11 - review of week 10

so i just knocked off work. its four in the morning... grrrr. I just gotta get some of this stuff outta my head...

week ten was lecture free...
I managed to spend a lot of time on the mag and so did ellena. Its been quite a productive week as far as reaching our proposed content. We have 53 pages and we have dropped it in to be printed again as another test run.

Another test run because...
- we've added magazine adds from other magazines. these were scanned in at 300 dpi and changes to cmyk in fotoshop. Hopefull they will be printed and look exactly like the originals. (fingures crossed).
- we've added alot of images in a section we call the underground expose(might be suBject to change). This consists of a 2 and half spreads of different underground art such as stencils and stickers in the brisbane area. accompanied of a street name where they can be found.
- we've also done a cover with an xray back drop which hopefully will look just as cool in print
they are the main elements we've added... I can't wait to see the print job again!!! hopefully all the adds and graphitti images turn out!!!

Just to explain...

The main reason we've decided to make the underground graffiti element was because we have been quite unsuccessfull in gaining an promotional material from ANY galleries!!! On friday the 21st. I spent about an hour on the phone ringing every gallery on the formention galleries. that was followed up ny an email to all of them. We regquested any digital or physical promotion they could provide.
NONE OF THEM HAVE RETURNED ANY SIGN OF CONTRIBUTING> YAY.
On the upside, pretty much all the galleries said we could take whateva content off their website we wanted So thats cool. Atleast we have that freedom. We could even design some of our own flyers for the exhibit...($$$)

SO... we decided to go underground. PArtly because its part of the target audience we hope to reach and because nbever the less it is an art form... and it is LOCALLY based art for eveyone to see (or ignore).

i like the idea and we found some really cool stuff... most of the images as mentioned have a street name.

Just thinking bout the advertising we've taken from other magazines. Considering this a PROTOTYPE its no problem and it allows us to think more about WHO rather then HOW. We've chosen advertisers that are australian or directly relate to our target audience.

so i think thats it.... we have a couple more pages to make like the galleries and stuff... but we already have most of the information or know where to find it...

Another thing which is cool is that ellena has the same cs2 illustrator! how cool is that... it made this whole process so much easier!!!!!!

so that it for now.

Bring yall upto date now... week nine

Hey everyone,

Just let me say first that I apologize to those who have been hanging on my blog waiting for more info… I’ve been hella busy-

So I’m gonna break it all down for yall....

First prices…

We have received three main quotes for our magazine… without revealing the company names; we were shocked at the prices across the board.
One print company offered 20 mags, half colour half b&w 60 pages, full gloss – $3,500 – yeah I know take a breath… there's more…

We received another quote for the same specs – 10 mags $1, 400

We received these figures at the beginning of last week. And I needed a week to get over it…
Then we received another quote which was a bit more reasonable –
60 pages, full colour, 300gsm cover, full gloss pages - $250 for 5 mags $450 for 10…

So that’s what were doing… for this reason we won’t be distributing this magazine on any real scale…BUT…

The benefits are still the same… we can still use this as a bargaining tool for gaining sponsorship or looking for advertising ….

In addition to this we will apply for some kind of discount as well… as we are students and additionally we can put up some advertising at our magazine launch which is free promo for the printing place

Magazine Launch

We have an exhibition at the end of semester as part of our degree. The whole year get to showcase their work in front of family/industry people/ potential employers…

We will treat this as our magazine launch… we will be giving away stickers and prints from our magazine(all work rightfully referenced/attributed to the artist) in addition to this we can have flyers and promotional cards for up coming exhibits on the local scene.

Progress

If you can call it that…

No we have made quite a bit of progress… Ellena has photoshoped 15 pages of fashion and article based stuff. Yesterday I had an awesome day on INDESIGN (which I love) and made a whopping 20 pages! This is most of the flickr content… I’m waiting on two contibuters…but this isn’t an issue. I can move on to other stuff and come back to the flickr people… Its more important to find some more local artists… I’ve found one site through a tutor which is local and really cool (http://www.emergencee.com.au/ ) but we will still approach all the galleries mentioned on this blog….

Next week is a lecture free week… YAY!
During the week, I intend to call (followed by an email) all the galleries on our list and give’ em a spiel on our project, what we hope to achieve and what we want from them… at the moment this will basically both digital and hard copy information/promotional materials for up coming events/exhibits.

That we can use the digital for the mag and use the physical to distribute at our magazine launch… If they can send us posters as well as flyers it’ll be awesome!

In addition. Maybe if they got any promo gear for their gallery its self. That could be cool to…

The more stuff we have to give away the better. We can also handout broachers of how to submit for potential advertising in our magazine.

One advantage that has arrisin from the fact that we won't be distributing this magazine is that of the rights to information... When thinking we were gonna distribute, we had to get permission to use resourses and stuff that we got off line. If we consideer this a prototype then we can take whateva content we want off the net... as long as we reference it.

For this reason its taken a bit of aload off... we can just copy paste tutes off the net as well as advertising from current magazineas as well as blogs, interview, reviews and what eva. When we consider the magazine, the issues are moved from the content to the design of the magazine...

If its a prototype, we can say we would get these people on the payroll... find people who make tutorials or people who review music festivals or exhibitions...

Thats the benefit of a prototype... you can say, "this is what we've done; if this was for real these are the process we would go through"

I guess i look at this whole process as a 'dry run' of how to make/print/fill/ditribute a magazine....

Okay... Back to the magazine

First off; let me apologies for being so slack and not posting for a week. I was tied up in lots of other work. For starters; we have good and bad quotes or more to the point; really expensive and those a bit more in our range.

After some discussion we have decided to modify the scope of our intended magazine. Rather then having this magazine for general distribution, it will jsut be a tool as for gaining interest. So considering that; if its not being ditributed then we don't necesarily need permision to copy stuff of web pages. For example; paste photoshop tutes that are web based in our magazine. So thats cool. We have a bit more flexibility as it turns out.

In addition, we've moved on to approaching some more locally based galleries to supply us with exhibit info for upcoming shows and so forth. If we can atleast get them an add at least next year when we go back and ask for advertising rights then perhaps we'll be a shoe in.

Personally i like the idea of the magazine being more about our ability to design layouts and gather information rather than buisness side and so forth.

ANd this leads us to another point that has arisen... the magazine launch...

For our exhibition at the end of semester; we will treat it like a magazine launch. Even though we won't be able to get that many magazines printed (see later post) we can still give away stickers, shirts, balloons and stuff. Perhaps some prints. Have a bit of a slide show or something.... Thats all pretty vague at the moment. I'll keep you posted.

So... thats a pretty good start I reckon....
The nect thing is to contact each gallery with a cover letter explaining our project and asking if they'll be willing to sponsor us or at least place one of thier ads in our magazine. Once we light the letter we can just spam all the galleries and see who comes back...

In addtion to local galleries perhaps we could target the hip cafes, alternative boutiques, cmall privately owned business and stuff; as to advertising and so forth....

anyway, i think i'm gonna go have a beer....
ha! later.
